The Zero Waste Alliance of Restaurants HK was formed in 2016. Our vision is for an environmentally sustainable food and beverage sector in Hong Kong.

Our mission is twofold: to minimise and prevent waste in restaurants; and to develop scalable, collaborative solutions to turn waste into resources.

The Alliance brings together nine businesses operating 19 cafes and restaurants in and around Soho and Sheung Wan: MANA! (Chair), FritesGrassroots Pantry, HomeHomegrown Foods, La Cabane, Locofamateakha and Twins Kitchen. They are supported by Baguio Green Group and Vegware (Solutions Partners), Ecozine (Media Partner) and Sustainable Business HK (Convenor).

Recyclables including glass, metal, paper and food waste are collected daily, directly from members’ premises. These are then distributed to Baguio’s recycling partners in Hong Kong and China.

Alliance members meet regularly to review progress, discuss next steps and exchange practices for minimising waste in their restaurants – for example: separating all wastes for recycling and reprocessing; avoiding single-use products; and switching from plastic packaging to compostable, plant-based materials.

Our future goals include composting vegetable waste; participating in the Government’s forthcoming waste-to-energy pilot; establishing as an independent NGO; and securing funding to expand into new neighbourhoods, to enable more restaurants to tap into our zero waste solutions and promote best practices across the sector.

We are proud to associate with our Affiliate Members, who are actively promoting zero waste and circular economy solutions for Hong Kong’s F&B sector: Food Savior, in the Loop, Last Straw Movement, LIVIN farms and Urban Spring.
